Match report day 2: Middx v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Middlesex v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

On a bitterly cold and overcast day, Lancashire applied even more pressure on the home side by declaring on 565 for 7, and then reducing them to 163 for 4 by close. Andrew Flintoff became the third batsman to score a hundred in the Lancashire innings, as maximum batting points were secured for the second time in three games. A cleverly timed declaration by Warren Hegg provided his bowlers with time to make inroads into the Middlesex batting line up. They responded well.

Bowling Performance of the Day

Although everyone bowled well, the best performance from a Lancashire bowler came from James Anderson. He captured the wickets of Strauss and Nash, and was unlucky not to dismiss Keonig in the 13th over.

Batting Performance of the Day

Andrew Flintoff smashed the Middlesex attack to all areas of the ground. 72 of his runs came in boundaries including 3 maximum hits in the space of 7 balls. His huge straight six into the Upper Compton Stand was most memorable - not only for the distance attained, but the fact that it nearly hit me!

Fielding Performance of the Day

Gary Keedy saved a vast number of runs fielding at point/covers. He is very athletic, and his attitude toward the game summed up Lancashire's focused approach.

Highlight of the Day

  • Andrew Flintoff's 111 runs from 111 balls - awesome power
  • The late wickets of Nash and Shah turned the game back in favour of the visitors.

Lowlights of the Day

  • Mark Chilton's drop at second slip when Keonig was 11
  • Stuart Law falling 2 runs short of a double hundred
  • The dismissal of Paul Weekes in the final over of the day. He was caught behind from the bowling of Peter Martin - unfortunately, not for the first time this season, it was deemed a no-ball.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

The dismissal of Mark Chilton - the decision by Umpire Steele adjudging him leg before wicket was a travesty.
