This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project
This match was drawn after Buckinghamshire had followed on 207 runs in arrears on first innings. A feature of the play was the batting for Oxfordshire of Marsh, who achieved the first double century in a championship game since the competition was inaugurated in 1895. Marsh's 200 not out was the highest score of the season and included 21 fours, 6 threes and 11 twos. 200 runs was a new record match run aggregate, exceeding the 194 runs by L Walker of Surrey 2nd XI against Glamorgan at Swansea in June. Marsh put on 152 runs for the ninth wicket with A Rogers, who scored 91. The partnership was the highest for that wicket during the season. Marsh and Arnold then added 84 runs for the last wicket, which was the equal highest for that wicket during the season. Marsh is reported as giving several chances, but all after he had scored his first century. None of the newspaper reports listed gives the duration of his innings, but it is likely to have been a few minutes short of five hours if the match started on time. For Buckinghamshire, Gresson top-scored with 78 not out and there were 6 fours in de Paravicini's 52.
When batting in the Buckinghamshire first innings, Wright passed the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches. He joined H E White of Hertfordshire and G J Thompson of Northamptonshire in the feat of scoring a thousand runs and taking a hundred wickets in the competition.
