A big and burly fast bowler, unlike other fast bowlers, is how every one knows Hoggard as. He bowls medium-fast, consistently hitting the 130kmph mark and also swings the ball at the same pace. His outswing is especially lethal and he intends to keep the seam of the ball upright most of the times. However, if the conditions aren’t too helpful, he tends to struggle. However, he is full of energy and can bowl long spells, even in searing heat and humidity. As a result, he has often bore the workload for the English attack through the years. Hailing from the talent rich Yorkshire, he made his Test debut against West Indies in 2000 and rose to the challenge of leading the attack in the unbeaten season of 2004 under Nasser Hussain. But the Ashes series in 2003 Down Under broke his confidence, where the left handed Australian batsmen just feasted on his bowling. But he came back strongly to take a Test hat-trick in West Indies in 2004 and followed it up with a 12 wicket haul in the winters against South Africa. And then, he took nine wickets in two Tests to play his part in the Ashes win of 2005. In 67 Test matches, he has taken 248 wickets at 30.50. But along with good bowling, he has also developed his batting a bit, especially his blocking and defensive play, becoming one of the most effective night watchmen in contemporary cricket.
