An attractive right handed stroke player Ramnaresh Sarwan more than anyone else has taken some pressure of Brian Lara in the new millennium. In true West Indian tradition Sarwan displaying nimble footwork plays his strokes with gay abandon. Immensely gifted Sarwan took no time in attracting attention and after his first Test innings an unbeaten 84 against Pakistan former England captain Ted Dexter was moved to predict a Test average of over 50. This was heady praise that would have been a millstone around any other youngster’s neck. But Sarwan with his unflappable temperament has maintained his reputation as one of the brightest young talents in world cricket displaying sparkling strokes and tenacity of purpose whenever needed. He took some time in settling down and his first Test hundred did not come till his 28th match and 49th innings. But since then he has been consistently among the runs, notching up big scores, centuries and even a double century but being an ambitious cricketer he would not be happy with his average which is a shade under 40. In ODIs he is one of the few to boast of an average of almost 45 in spite of an impressive run rate of nearly 77, playing a stellar role in West Indies’ triumphant ICC Champions Trophy campaign in England in 2004. Vice captain to Lara for some years now Sarwan seems to be the logical successor. His occasional leg breaks have got him unexpected success in both Tests and ODIs.
