Summary for Day 1

Once again Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat. However, unlike the wicket at the Oval, the pitch did offer some assistance to the bowler, if the ball was put in the right place. Lancashire's opening pair compiled another 50 partnership before the loss of the first wicket. Loye and Flintoff ensured Lancashire posted a respectable total, before a late collapse reduced the hosts to 354 all out. If the weather does not interrupt, this could turn out to be an interesting and challenging total.

 

Bowling Performance of the Day

On his return to Old Trafford, Steve Elworthy captured 5 wickets for 71 runs. He extracted bounce and movement, and maintained a disciplined line and length.

 

Batting Performance of the Day

Mal Loye became the first Lancashire player to score two consecutive centuries on debut for the club. His innings was a combination of exciting stroke play and deep concentration. At one stage, he scored just 18 runs in 27 overs, but remained totally focused on the job in hand.

 

Fielding Performance of the Day

Chris Read was very tidy behind the wicket, and managed to take two smart catches

 

Highlight of the Day

Aside from Mal Loye's second hundred for the club - Andrew Flintoff's innings of 97 was precision and power. It was particularly pleasing to witness the foundation which he developed before unleashing a number of boundary strokes

 

Lowlight of the Day

Flintoff's dismissal for 97. Both Schofield and Hegg look badly out of touch with the bat. The loss of 5 wickets for 14 runs just before the close of play
