TOWNSEND, Frank.
Amateur.
Born at Clifton, Bristol, 17th October 1847.
Died at Lambeth, London, 25th October 1920.
Born and raised at Clifton, he learnt his cricket with the Clifton Club, of which he became captain 1868-93. In 1870 he was first selected for Gloucestershire, his debut in first-class cricket in which he played in 179 matches, including 169 for Gloucestershire, his last appearance being in 1891. Being a schoolmaster limited his appearances to the month of August. He became the headmaster of Llantrissant House School, Clifton. He was the father of A.F.M. (Gloucestershire and Essex), C.L. (Gloucestershire) and F.N. (Gloucestershire), Grandfather of D.C.H. and P.N. (both Oxford University) and great-grandfather of J.R.A. (Oxford University).
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at The School, Llantrissant House, Clifton, Bristol, aged 33, a schoolmaster, together with his wife, Louisa, aged 33 born in Newport, Monmouthshire.
