BOYS, John James.

Born at Titchfield, Hampshire, 17th August 1856.
Died at Woolwich, Kent, 1st August 1883.
He entered the Army at the age of fifteen and became a musician in the Royal Artillery Band, stationed at Woolwich. His first appearance at LordÂ’s was when he opened the innings for the Royal Artillery against the Household Brigade, on 12th May 1876, when he scored 44 having taken five wickets for 45 runs. He was asked many times to play for Kent but was unable to get leave of absence, but he did manage three matches for them 1875-81.
Due to be married he was at the residence of his wife to be on the day of their proposed marriage when he suddenly died.
In the 1881 Census he appears at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Woolwich, Kent, as a 24 year old gunner.
