Surrey 2nd XI inflicted Staffordshire's first defeat in over two years, beating them by 4 wickets with 12 minutes to spare on the second day. For the winners in their first innings William Abel hit 16 fours in his 109 and Peach scored 87 not out including 7 fours, the pair forming a partnership of 158 for the third wicket in 75 minutes.
Freeman took 5 for 37 in the Staffordshire first innings. Staffordshire had to follow on in arrears of 139 but their captain Meakin came to the rescue with a splendid innings of 137 with 2 fives and 13 fours. R A Heath helped him to add 97 for the fourth wicket, but after that no one could stay with him and he was last man out. With Surrey at 68 for 6 wickets an improbable Staffordshire victory seemed on the cards, but Naumann and T E Abel knocked off the runs required.
In Staffordshire's second innings Meakin scored 2 fives, R A Heath one and Morgan another, giving the unusual total of 4 fives scored in the innings.
