Devon won this return match by 151 runs shortly before lunch on the second day after a reversal of fortune. The match between the two sides at Newport in July had been drawn. On the first day Devon were bowled out for 35 before lunch and ended play only 96 runs ahead with only two wickets remaining. The result was to prove a setback to Monmouthshire's efforts to win the Championship. For the winners, Light took 11 wickets in the match for 63 runs and Aston 8 for 89. There were 8 fours in Brunskill's 68 and 1six and 8 fours in Davies's 57 not out. In the Devon second innings, Brunskill and Boles put on 50 runs for the seventh wicket, and Davies and Aston 93 for the last wicket. For the visitors, Robathan's 52 contained 6 fours. In the Monmouthshire first innings Robathan and Stedman put on 56 for the eighth wicket. The Devon first innings total of 35 was the second lowest of the season.
