This return match was drawn, with Hertfordshire putting in a strong batting performance in their second effort after Staffordshire had gained a lead of 121 runs on first innings. The match at Watford the week before had been won by Staffordshire by an innings. For Hertfordshire, Pigg's 100 included 10 fours, 6 threes and 7 twos, and his 79 contained 5 fours.
His match aggregate of 179 runs was the highest of the season. Wells's 84 included 9 fours, Harford's 57 contained 9 fours, and Golding's 52 included 4 fours. In the visitors' second innings Pigg and Wells put on 179 runs for the first wicket, which was the second highest partnership for that wicket during the season and, for a short while, it was a new record for the Championship, exceeding the 165 put on by R H Mallett and J W Welford for Durham against Staffordshire at Stoke in 1895. It was itself beaten later in the season when L G A Collins and M J Dauglish put on 224 for the first wicket for Berkshire v Oxfordshire at Reading in August. In the first innings Pigg and Wilders added 50 for the last wicket.
For Staffordshire, there were 4 fours in Fernie's 63 not out. The match aggregate of 899 runs was the second highest of the season
