Biography: | Career soldier who was deputy-chief Imperial General Staff 1938-39, commander Northern Command 1939-40, Adjutant-General 1940-46, becoming director-general British Council 1947-50, and board chairman UNESCO 1952-54. Succeeded his father as Adam baronet 1926. Awarded DSO 1918. Appointed OBE 1919, CB 1939, KCB 1941, GCB 1946, for military services. MCC president 1946-47. |
