| The report of the 'Cricketer' publishing Committee on page 75 of the American Cricketer (30 November 1880) stated: It will be seen that the first elevens of the Germantown and Young America clubs stand at a tie for the first place; and under the ordinary rules on prize competitions, the cup could not be awarded; but by the terms of the gift, as set forth in the letter of the Halifax Cup team, the determination of the award of the cup is to be a matter of opinion and need not merely depend on the number of first eleven matches won and lost. Acting on this basis it is the opinion of this committee that the Young America Cricket Club is entitled to the position of champion club of Philadelphia, for the season of 1880, and the Halifax Cup is therefore awarded to that club.
