India lost Virender Sehwag early in their second innings to be at 51 for one on the second day of the third and final Test against New Zealand at Basin Reserve in Wellington on Saturday. Sehwag smashed three fours in his 12-run knock before he was surprised by a steep rising delivery by Chris Martin and edged to first slip for Ross Taylor to take the catch.

 

Earlier, New Zealand were bundled out 197 runs in their first innings. Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh took the bowling honours taking five and three wickets respectively as New Zealand trailed India by 182 runs. New Zealand innings ended when Iain O'Brien edged to India captain and wicket keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his his 6th catch. Harbhajan dismissed Brendon McCullum (24) to reduce New Zealand to 181/9 when the wicket keeper-batsman tried to cut, but could only edge to Dhoni. Zaheer registered his 7th five-wicket haul in Test cricket when he dismissed Tim Southee (16) as the Kiwis kept losing wickets at regular intervals. New Zealand scored 76 runs in the second session with the loss of 5 wickets and trailed India by 239 runs at tea. Ishant Sharma dismissed New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori (11) to reduce the hosts to 138/7 by having him caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his first wicket.

 

New Zealand were already reeling at 125/6 with Harbhajan Singh taking 2 wickets in 2 overs. Harbhajan took his second wicket when James Franklin (15) tried to sweep, but edged to square leg for Virender Sehwag to take the catch. In his previous over, Harbhajan dismissed Ross Taylor to reduce New Zealand to 120/5. Harbhajan took his first wicket when he had Taylor caught down the leg side by captain and wicket keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to take the catch. Taylor hit 6 fours in his 42-run knock.

 

This was after Zaheer Khan ran through the New Zealand top order to reduce the hosts to 98/4 after lunch. Zaheer got his fourth scalp in the form of a bonus as Jesse Ryder threw his wicket away. Ryder (3) reached out for a wide delivery and edged to captain and wicket keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the catch. Zaheer took his third wicket in the fourth over after lunch when he dismissed Tim McIntosh. McIntosh looked to leave a rising delivery but was not quick enough to take his hands out of the way and edged to first slip for Yuvraj Singh to take the catch. McIntosh hit 6 fours in his 32-run knock.

 

Before lunch, New Zealand innings was dented by a double strike from Zaheer, who took two wickets in three overs to reduce the hosts to 31/2. Zaheer took his second wicket by drawing Daniel Flynn (2) forward and getting the ball to move away while taking the outside edge for captain and wicket keeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni to take an easy catch. Zaheer got his first wicket by bringing all his experience into play to remove Martin Guptill and put New Zealand at 21/1. Coming from round the wicket, Zaheer cramped Guptill for room as he edged the ball onto the stumps.

 

India were bowled out for 379 runs in their first innings. Chris Martin ended the Indian first innings in the third over of the day's play when he had Ishant Sharma (18) caught behind by Brendon McCullum. Ishant and Munaf Patel (15 not out) could add only 4 runs to the overnight Indian score of 375/9.
