Event: | Bangladesh in South Africa 2008/09 |
DateLine: 22nd November 2008
Bangladesh lose the first test by an innings and 129 runs against South Africa at Bloemfontien. Electing to field first after winning the toss the Bangladesh team were starring down the barrel from ball one.If not for the weather the match would have been over in three days.
Centuries by Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla set South Africa up for a huge score on day one. But a late order collapse made sure that South Africa were bowled out for 441.Shakib Al Hasan picked up 5 wickets.Bangladesh could not stand up to the pace bowling of the hostile South African quicks and were bowled out for 153 in the first innings. They trailed South Africa by 268 runs.
Following on, the hostility of Steyn was too hot to handle. Again they were bowled out for 159 runs to lose by an innings and 129 runs. Steyn ended up with 5 wickets. The fact that they ended up losing 7 to 8 wickets before getting to even hundred showed how much Bangladesh were struggling to come to terms with the conditions. Not a single batsmen had the technique or a stomach for a fight. The captain has to lead from the front
A three day game was sufficient rather than a five day game with all the rain happening. With Bangladesh unable to come to grips with such tough conditions they are going to be hard pressed to compete in the second test starting in 4 days time in Centurion Park.South Africa on the other hand will be looking for more batting practice keeping in mind the tour of Australia. The only worry for them will be the batting form of Jacques Kallis who hasn't scored a hundred for some time now.
