Daren Powell has a very interesting story to tell if asked about how he became a fast bowler. He initially started as a no. 3 batsman and off-spinner when at school in Jamaica, but then came across a concrete pitch that he thought wouldn't suit his spin bowling, so decided to try some medium pace. Ever since then he has been bowling his medium pace to batsmen around the world.

Now he has developed into a slippery quick bowler but due to a spate of injuries, has struggled to consistently build on his place in the team. He made his debut against New Zealand in 2002 but that was his only match of the series. Same was the story in India, and only in 2003 did he play the full series against Bangladesh.
The dispute between players with Cable & Wireless contracts and the West Indies board resulted in seven players being unavailable for the first Test against South Africa in March 2005, and after an impressive Carib Beer Series, he was back in the first team for the West Indies. However he was spanked all over the park that season and failed to impress anybody. The turnaround came in the 2006-07 season when he picked up nine wickets at 27.55 in the ODIs and earned a call-up to the 2007 World Cup squad where too he turned in a series of sound performances.LATEST SCORES
