Ajit Agarkar Profile

Player:AB Agarkar

DateLine: 19th February 2007

He burst upon the scene as a 20-year-old nearly a decade ago and his sublime all round skills saw him hailed as potentially the best thing to happen to Indian cricket since Kapil Dev. Over the years though Ajit Agarkar has not fulfilled this potential. The selectors have however persevered with him giving him numerous chances in both Tests and ODIs. And while he has pulled in his weight now and then “a century in a losing cause at Lord's in 2002 and a match winning bowling performance at Adelaide the following year“ his Test record is well below par marred in particular by his seven consecutive ducks against Australia. In ODIs however he has a commendable record though one feels given his natural gifts he should have done better. After all he had a dramatic entry into international cricket he fastest to 50 wickets in ODIs and a half-century off 21 balls against Zimbabwe. There are however signs that his natural gifts and immense potential are finally fructifying as he seems to enjoy his role as senior partner in the current pace quartet. Slightly built but whippy and deceptive with the ball and aggressive with the bat, Agarkar's best days could still lie ahead.
