MUMBAI: Indian selectors on Wednesday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming four-match Test series against the West Indies. Suresh Raina and VRV Singh have been included in the squad in place of the injured Sachin Tendulkar and Ajit Agarkar. Wasim Jaffer has been included in the squad after passing a fitness test in Mumbai on May 23. All-rounder Ramesh Powar was also included in the team, which has Dinesh Karthik as the second wicketkeeper.

Agarkar’s removal from the Test squad was a bit of a surprise considering his strong showing in the one-day series so far. The selectors have also not included an extra opener in the team. With skipper Rahul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell in favour of a team with five bowlers, VVS Laxman should return to the playing 11 when the first Test gets under way from June 2.

The squad: Rahul Dravid (capt), Virender Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, Venkatsai Laxman, Mohammad Kaif, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Mahendra Dhoni, Dinesh Karthick, Ramesh Powar, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Irfan Pathan, Shanthakumaran Sreesanth, Vikram Rajvir Singh, Munaf Patel.
