Paul Havells Derbyshire debut was a promising one, as he provided virtually the only resistance to a South African XI practising their way to well over 400. He took the first 4 wickets, 3 of them LBW, which showed a pleasing keenness to pitch the ball up for such a tall (6 3) man, and in Graeme Smith he had a maiden scalp who had scored a pair of double centuries in the Test series earlier that summer. However, Havell was frequently too expensive to ever build much sustained pressure on batsmen, and his pace and height meant that although he could always be threatening, any loose spells could be severely punished. With some poor displays with the ball in 2005, and as a natural no.11, it was virtually inevitable that Havell would be a victim of David Houghtons clear out at the County Ground, although there are signs that Havell will try and continue in the First-class game. Havell also played 1 wicket less match for Sussex against Cambridge University in 2001.
