Player: | MJ Clarke |
DateLine: 26th May 2009
Clarke was already anointed as his country's next captain before he'd played a single Test. He made his Test debut in 2004 in Bangalore against India and he produced a thrilling 151. Barely a year after his a run of poor form without a century led to his demotion. He remained a one-day fixture but he had to wait until the low-key series against Bangladesh to reclaim his Test place. Until his sacking in 2005 Clarke was a sensational shotmaker with an unshakeable temperament. His bouncy fielding and searing run-outs, usually from square of the wicket, add to his value, while his left-arm tweakers cajole important breakthroughs, including six wickets in the second innings of his fourth Test at Mumbai in 2004.
