DateLine: 3rd May 2009
Onions caught the eye of the selectors during the 2006 season for Durham and did good enough to make a place in England's provisional 30-man squad for the Champions Trophy. A good seam bowler, he has also been more than a useful lower order batsman for his county. He was called up to replace Darren Gough in England's one-day squad for the remaining three one-dayers against Pakistan in September 2006. The same year, he toured Bangladesh with England A, under the then-Academy director Peter Moores. The 2007 season was more of a struggle for the seamer and more often than not due to Ottis Gibson's outstanding form, he was forced to sit out of the side. But he still spent the following winter with the England Lions and made sure his form witnesses an upswing. Onions has been having a good county season this year and the last match that his side played against Somerset saw him picking up six wickets in the first innings. He has been rewarded for his consistency and has been named in England's squad to face West Indies in 2009.
