Match report day 2: Kent v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Kent v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

A suicidal run out in the 16th over of Lancashire's innings, followed by three further wickets within the space of 12 overs either side of the tea interval, left the red rose county staring down the barrel of defeat by the close of play. Ultimately, a mixture of wayward bowling and inept batting on a very flat pitch cost the title favourites dearly. However, during the first session of the day, Kent's players continued to apply themselves and piled on the agony for the fielders and bowlers alike.

Matthew Walker and Michael Carberry batted with great composure. It came as no surprise when the pair posted a 150 run partnership in the 136th over. In desperation, Hegg used the services of Alec Swann with the ball. Lancashire's field placings reflected the attitude of the team - negative and lacking self belief. Shortly before lunch, Walker (72) edged Swann to Hegg (556-5). It was disappointing to witness Walker standing his ground despite the obvious contact with the bat. Kent's wicket-keeper, O'Brien played back to Keedy in the last over before the break and was bowled without troubling the scorers (571-6).

Glen Chapple offered some brief rest bite for Lancashire by removing Carberry (85) and Sami (0) in the space of 2 balls - both caught behind (580-8). His hat-trick delivery was just kept out by Stiff. Chapple finished with figures of 5 for 136 as he also captured the last 2 wickets of Kent's innings. Stiff fell leg before for 18, and Patel (25) hooked to deep square leg (615 all out).

Lancashire maintained a brisk scoring rate during the first 10 overs. Perhaps they would have struggled slightly more if Symonds had not failed to hold a simple slip catch off Sami in the first over to dismiss Chilton. Ironically enough, the visitors first wicket fell on 83 - the same at Kent on the previous day. Without any explanation, Chilton (37) opted for a quick single to mid-on. Sheriyar's direct throw broke the wicket and the disgruntled opener sauntered back to the pavilion. Two overs later. Loye (1) found a thin edge to O'Brien (96-2) and trouble was looming large. Law (17) edged his fellow Australian (Symonds) to Walker at second slip in the 26th over, and Sutcliffe (50) was adjudged leg before wicket one over later - a poor decision by umpire Kitchen (131-4).

Glen Chapple and Alec Swann added 52 for the fifth wicket before Walker held his second catch at slip. This time from the bowling of David Stiff to remove Chapple for 28 (183-5). In the following over, Swann (19) was hit on the pad a long way down the wicket, but umpire Burgess upheld Kent's vehement appeal (201-6). Steven Crook smashed a huge six over deep mid wicket at the start of his innings, and was fortunate to survive a similar shot when Symonds held a catch, but carried the ball over the rope. Crook also survived a juggling attempt from Fulton just before bad light brought an early close to the days play. Without any doubt whatsoever, this was Lancashire's worst performance of the season. They have left themselves with a monumental task if they are to save the game (246-6).
