Scorecard: | Essex v Lancashire |
Summary
Only 21 overs play was possible at Chelmsford in this totesport division one match due to heavy persistent rain. The players initially played on through light drizzle for several overs before giving in just after 5.30pm. The rain never abated until 8.45pm, by which time the crowd number had reduced by half. The umpires announced a restart at 9.30pm if no further rain fell. Lancashire revised target for victory was 110 from 13 overs. Alas, the rain started to fall shortly after the players finished their brief warm up routine. The spectators were left hanging around not really understanding what was going on. Truthfully, the game should have been called off much earlier, but clearly Essex were desperate to collect 4 points to avoid relegation. Glamorgan's 10 run Duckworth/Lewis victory over Kent virtually secured them the title, while Lancashire's two points all but mathematically guaranteed their first division status for 2005.
