Brief profile of F.H.Read
by Don Ambrose

Player:FH Read

READ, Frederick Hurrell.
Professional.
Born at Thames Ditton, Surrey, 26th December 1855.
Died at Hounslow, Middlesex, 4th May 1933.
The nephew of H.H.Stephenson (Surrey) and the brother of John Maurice Read (Surrey) he played in just the one match for Surrey in 1881.
At first no trace of him could be found in the 1881 Census, but Chris Amos of Malta points out that there was a Frederick Read, a 21 year old railway clerk, born at Thames Ditton, boarding at The Eagle Tavern, Wine and Beer House, Witton Road, Isleworth, an establishment run by James Wilson, a caprenter aged 58 and his wife Ann aged 58 also. The 1901 Census finds him at Wakeford Villas, Heath Road, Isleworth, aged 43, a professional cricketer, with his wife Amelia E. aged 28, two daughters, Elsie L. aged 5, and Jessie E. aged 3, and a son Frederick H. aged one. There is one domestic servant. He seems to have understated his age by 3-4 years.
