Gary Butcher took a wicket with his first ball on his debut for Glamorgan in the Sunday League against Somerset at Swansea in 1994. The youngest son of Alan Butcher subsequently proved himself to be a useful all-rounder, especially in one-day games, although he failed to command a regular place in Glamorgan`s Championship side.

 

In 1999 Butcher joined Surrey, and he subsequently became a member of their Championship winning team. He had also been a member of Glamorgan`s Championship squad in 1997, when he appeared in nine of the Welsh county`s Championship games.
