Like many young cricketers in the late 1930`s, Evan James lost his best years to the Second World War.

The middle-order batsman and right-arm seamer had shown promise for the Welsh Schools team and also the Cardiff club in the 1930`s. He was subsequently chosen to appear in the county`s wartime fixtures in 1944 and 1945, and joined the county`s staff after the War.
James duly played in nine first-class matches in 1946 and 1947. His finest moment in Glamorgan`s colours was in 1946 when he struck an unbeaten 62 against the Indian tourists at Swansea.
