Player: | Javed Miandad |
Javed Miandad was one of the top Test batsmen of the 1980`s, and the gifted Pakistani strokemaker first played in England for Pakistan in the 1975 World Cup. He subsequently joined Sussex, and played for them between 1976 and 1979. Whilst with the South Coast club, he shared the position of overseas player, so in 1980 he accepted an offer from Glamorgan to be their first-choice overseas player.

He was also appointed the club`s captain in 1981 and 1982, and the mercurial Pakistani thrilled the crowds with his gifted stroke play, setting a string of county records, including a club best of eight first-class centuries and 2,083 runs in 1981. In all, Javed struck 17 centuries for Glamorgan, with perhaps the most memorable being his majestic 200 against Essex in 1981. It was achieved on a spiteful Colchester wicket that was giving appreciable help to the home spinners, and through his efforts Glamorgan nearly pulled off a remarkable victory.
Despite his brilliant batting, Glamorgan still enjoyed little collective success, so the club signed West Indian paceman Winston Davis to bolster their flagging seam attack. It strengthened Glamorgan`s bowling resources, but for the second time in his career, Javed had to share overseas duties with another player, and after much speculation and public debate, Javed played his final game for Glamorgan in 1985.
