HICKMOTT, Edward.
Professional.
Born at Maidstone, Kent, 20th March 1850.
Died at West Malling, Kent, 7th January 1934.
An average batsman, but fair wicket-keeper who played in ten first-class matches for Kent between 1875 and 1888. He was engaged at the Mote cricket ground, Maidstone, as bowler and groundsman for many years. In 1904 a match between the Gentlemen of Kent and the Players of Kent at the Mote was played for his benefit. His nephew William Edward Hickmott played in three matches for Kent (1914-21) and 34 matches for Lancashire (1923-34).
The 1881 Census finds him resident with his mother at the Kings Arms, Boxley Street, Boxley, Kent, under the mis-transcribed name of HICKNOTT. His widowed mother Harriet, aged 60, is a licensed victualler, her married daughter, Harriet Hicknott (sic) is a 38 year old chamber maid. Her unmarried 31 year old son William is a barman, and Edward, also 31 and unmarried is a professional cricketer. Albert E.Hicknott is a 7 year old grandson. There is one domestic servant and two lodgers, a farm labourer and a wheelwright.
