Player:FFJ Greenfield

GREENFIELD, Rev. Frederick Francis John.
Amateur.
Born at Gorakhpur, India, 10th May 1850.
Died near Dundee, Natal, South Africa, 25th October 1900.
He was educated at Hurstpierpoint, staying on as an assistant master, until 1873, when he went up to St Peter’s College, Cambridge. He was a member of the University cricket eleven 1873-76, being captain in his last year. He played in 85 first-class matches, including 62 for Sussex, which he captained 1876-78 and 1881-2. He was a member of the Sussex committee 1881-90. He took Holy orders and was curate of Bruisyard, Suffolk, 1877-81, of Saxtead, Suffolk, 1881-83, and of Milton-next-Gravesend 1883-84. He was chaplain of the Haywards Heath Asylum 1884-90. W.A.Bettesworth states “he suddenly disappeared. Hard things were said about him, and he may have deserved them.” He emigrated to South Africa, joined the Cape Mounted Rifles, but later opened a school at Dundee, Natal. He was captured during the Boer War and had a hard time in captivity and was robbed of all he possessed. He returned to England in an attempt to obtain redress, but returned to South Africa only to die of pleurisy shortly afterwards.
At the time of the 1881 Census he is shown as a clerk in Holy orders, second master at Albert Middle Class College, Framlingham, Suffolk, unmarried, aged 29. There are six other assistant masters and four servants.
