GILBERT, John.
Professional.
Christened at Buxted, Sussex, 17th October 1830.
Died at Newick, Sussex, 28th November 1896.
He played his cricket in the Uckfield area and at Sheffield Park. His first match at Lords was for Twenty two Colts of England v M.C.C. in 1880, when he was forty-nine years of age. The following year he played in his first and only first-class match, for Lord Sheffields XI, when he scored a duck! He continued to play the game until well past sixty. His brother (?) William also played in one first-class match , in his case for Sussex in 1879, at the age of 23
In the 1881 Census he appears living with his sister, Jane Vincent, a 58 year old widow, who was an independent annuitant. He is unmarried, aged 51, and a maltster. Also living at Whites House, Fletching, Sussex, is Margaret Gilbert, a 27 year old niece of Jane Vincent, who is described as a brewers daughter.
