While South Africa was winning through to Sunday’s final of the ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup by beating Pakistan by 98 runs at Kinrara Oval, three other games were going on around Malaysia.

West Indies gleaned some consolation from its failure to qualify for the Super League stage of the tournament by winning the Plate Championship at Bayuemas. Having been placed in the so-called group of death along with the two eventual finalists, India and South Africa, as well as Papua New Guinea, it was always going to be an uphill task for the boys from the Caribbean.

But all through this tournament Shamarh Brooks and his team-mates have shown plenty of talent with the likes of Kieran Powell, Steven Jacobs and Darren Bravo to the fore.

Up against defending champion and consistently the top Associate team at this level Nepal, the Windies made short work of the task at hand, dismissing its opponent for just 74 in 25.3 overs.

Jason Dawes was the pick of the bowlers with a fine 4-18 while Bravo (2-8) also bowled well. In reply, it took the West Indies just 14.2 overs to knock off the runs with Bravo there at the end unbeaten on 24.

Despite this defeat, it has been another excellent tournament for Nepal having won the Plate Championship in Sri Lanka two years ago. The overall performances of this young Nepal side bodes well for the future of the game in that country.

Meanwhile, in the Plate Championship play-off final in Johor, Ireland beat a Full Member for the first time in its history at under-19 level when it defeated Zimbabwe by six wickets.

Andrew Britten took 4-14 as Ireland restricted Zimbabwe to 99-9 off 27 overs after the game had been reduced due to rain. Only Reginald Nehonde (43) was able to put up any real resistance to the Irish attack.

In reply, Ireland lost four wickets on the way to reaching the target with James Hall top scoring on 32 off 29 balls as the Irish got home with six wickets and 3.4 overs to spare.

In the other game of the day, old rivals Australia and England went head to head in the Super League play-off final but alas, the rain had the final say and the match was abandoned before a result was possible.

For the record, Australia made 106-7 when they finally got out to play after the match had been reduced to 24 overs each. Australia opening batsman Kirk Pascoe batted well for his 55 and for England James Harris (2-8) and Steven Finn (2-11) kept the total down nicely.

England only managed to bat for 10.5 overs before the rain returned and by then had made good progress, putting on 47 for the loss of two wickets with Billy Godleman not out on 20.
