Dan Cherry, the Glamorgan opening batsman, nearly became the first English batsman to start his batting with a pair of double hundreds. The left-hander, who hit 226 earlier in the season against Middlesex at Southgate, made 166 in the first innings of Glamorgan`s Championship match with Gloucestershire at Bristol, and came within 34 runs of emulating the feats of Victor Trumper, Khalid Irtiza, Yashpal Singh and DS Jadhav who had all begun their careers by scoring double hundreds.

His feat though is a Glamorgan record as no other batsman in Glamorgan`s history have begun their careers with two scores in excess of 150. As the list below shows, 15 other batsmen have recorded Championship scores in excess of 150 as either their first or second hundred for Glamorgan, but none had begun with two scores over 150.
The early batting feats of Willie Jones in Championship cricket for Glamorgan are the only ones to draw comparison with Dan Cherry`s. Jones began with 132 against Essex at the Arms Park in 1947, before posting 207 against Kent at Gravesend in 1948, and a fortnight later 212*v Essex at Brentwood.
Of those players to start their careers with a pair of double hundreds, Victor Trumper, batting for New South Wales at Sydney in 1898/99, scored 292* against Tasmania and 253 against New Zealand, whilst Khalid Itriza made 290 for United Bank against Multan at Karachi in 1975/76, followed later in that season by 201 for Sind A against Pakistan Universities at Lahore.
In 2001/02 Yashpal Singh made 202 for Services against Punjab at Amritsar, and then in 2002/03 he hit 240 for Services against Tripura at Delhi. Dheeraj Jadhav of Maharashtra is the most recent batsman to achieve the feat, scoring 200 against Orissa at Cuttack in 2003/04, before hitting 207 against Himachal Pradesh at Ichalkaranji Municipal Maidan later in the same season.
