Match report day 3: Surrey v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Surrey v Lancashire

Summary of day 3

As I drove out of the car park at Whitgift school, the inner pain resembled that of a visit to the dentist for a filling - without any anaesthetic! Despite watching Dominic Cork blast the second fastest century of the season, Lancashire had just lost by an innings and 55 runs inside 8 sessions. Other results left Lancashire not only in the relegation zone, but one place from claiming the wooden spoon. Whilst relegation to division two is by no means guaranteed, I have already mentally prepared myself for the inconceivable to happen, and believe me that really hurts.

Haynes and Hooper resisted Surrey's bowlers for 13 overs before Haynes (22) was given out leg before wicket despite appearing to be slightly outside the line of the off stump (68-4). Schofield (2) only lasted 6 balls before Ormond clipped the top of his middle stump bowling around the wicket (73-5). The following delivery after securing his 50, Hooper pushed forward to Azhar Mahmood and was caught behind by Batty (104-6). What followed 4 overs later defied belief. Murtagh's throw from long leg hit the stumps at the bowlers end to leave Chapple short of his ground - talk about the icing on the cake. The rain fell gently during the lunch interval, but play still restarted on time. Hogg dropped by Brown at second slip with the 2nd ball after lunch only added 5 runs before being snapped up by Newman at extra cover (156-80. By now, Cork had already started his one man assault of Surrey's bowling attack. Obviously, he had nothing to lose. He narrowly failed to beat Andre Adams 80 ball century against Leicestershire earlier in the season. The ninth wicket partnership added 75 runs with Mahmood scoring 31 before being caught and bowled Doshi.

Cork finally hauled out to Tim Murtagh on the deep mid-wicket boundary for 109 shortly after 3pm to leave Lancashire with an unwanted day off in south London and with no golf clubs to hand either!!
