Match report day 2: Lancs v Warwicks in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Warwickshire

Summary of day 2

Lancashire faced the prospect of a long hard day in the field with Brown and Bell's partnership reaching 254 in the 111th over. Once again, there was far too much short pitched bowling and the crowd rightly voiced their opinion. Cork responded by dismissing Bell (112) and Hogg (0) in the 113th over (346-6). Warwickshire lost their last four wickets for 64 runs and failed to collect maximum batting points in the process. The hosts collected their third bowling point with one-ball to spare after Brown needlessly tossed his wicket away. In the 9th over of Lancashire's response, Chilton (19) was bowled by Neil Carter (32-1). Sutcliffe and Loye repaired the damage either side of the tea interval, before Loye sustained a leg injury (Achilles) which forced him from the field despite having a runner for a short period of time (99-1). Mongia (15) offered a simple caught and bowled chance in the 49th over (130-2), while captain Hooper (16) repeated his Cheltenham dismissal by hauling out at long-on (148-3). Sutcliffe (67) and Schofield (3) steered Lancashire to 167 for 3 at the close, still trailing by 243 runs. More importantly 94 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.
