Match report day 3: Glos v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Gloucestershire v Lancashire

Summary for Day 3

The third day of this county championship match generally went to plan for the visitors. They wrapped up Gloucestershire's first innings in the space of 14 overs with Dominic Cork finishing with 5 for 54, to establish a first innings lead of 141. Although the home supporters were delighted to pass the follow-on target of 226, Lancashire had already decided to bat third in the knowledge that the pitch would take spin on the final day.

Fisher (1) and Adshead (40) were both caught behind by Jamie Haynes in the 60th and 64th overs respectively. Martin Ball (8) steered Cork to Mal Loye in the gully with 10 runs still required to avoid the follow-on. Jon Lewis hit a breezy 14 before losing his off stump to Glen Chapple's first ball of the day (234 all out). Averis remained unbeaten on 10.

Lancashire's target was to post 500 runs by 5.30pm, declare and take a couple of early wickets. The plan was almost accomplished with precision by the close of play. Sutcliffe (61) was caught and bowled by Ball in the 34th over after establishing a partnership of 115 with Mark Chilton for the first wicket. Mal Loye smashed an aggressive 69 from 54 balls before being caught at long leg by Mike Hussey (230-2). Loye and Chilton doubled Lancashire's score in just 16 overs as Gloucestershire struggled to contain the visitors. Adshead must regret missing a simple stumping in the 37th over to send Loye back to the dressing room for just 6. Chilton attained his second century of the season shortly after the tea interval from 157 balls. His second 50 runs coming in just 51 balls. Mongia stroked a commanding 76 not out before Hooper elected to declare at 5.17pm. Chilton remained undefeated on 124, just 2 runs short of reaching his highest score for the club. Obviously, there is no room for sentiment in the Lancashire dressing room. The visitors held a healthy lead of 495, setting Gloucester 496 to win from a minimum 116 overs.

Lancashire captured the vital wicket of Craig Spearman in the 5th over for just 8 runs when Mal Loye held a straight forward opportunity in the gully (11-1). Unfortunately, no further wickets fell in the last 15 overs despite a few loud appeals for leg before wicket. Make no mistake, Gloucestershire could reach the remaining target on the final day if Lancashire bowl badly. The visitors easily managed to score over 200 runs in the afternoon session courtesy of a fast outfield and a short boundary to the College side of the ground. At the same time, Lancashire are more than capable of taking 9 wickets to secure a vital win.
