Match report Surrey v Lancs totesport League 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Surrey v Lancashire

Summary

Lancashire gained revenge in this totesport match for the heavy defeat inflicted by Surrey in the championship a couple of days previous. One suspects that the team would have preferred to have won the four day encounter rather than the one day game. However, the victory was a crucial morale booster especially as there was no match until the following Sunday (Glamorgan @ Colwyn Bay). In addition to this, Lancashire would have been totally devastated to allow Surrey off the hook, bearing in mind the hosts stuttered their way to 72 for 6 in the 20th over.

Lancashire won the toss and elected to field. Dominic Cork bowled unchanged from the north end for 9 overs. He conceded 21 runs in the 3rd over as Ally Brown launched an aggressive early onslaught. Cork responded well in the 5th over by dismissing both openers. He followed up by removing Ramprakash (2) leg before wicket in his 4th over. It made a pleasant change to see Cork pitching the ball up to the batsman (32-3). Sajid Mahmood chipped in with Newman's wicket in the 8th over to leave the hosts reeling on 38 for 4. Eight overs later, Clarke (9) chipped tamely to Chilton in the covers (63-5), and Jonathan Batty was run out by Chris Schofield with a breathtaking pick-up and throw from point in the 20th over (72-6) to suggest an early finish.

Adam Hollioake received a standing ovation as he made his way to the wicket. This was his final home appearance for the club. Together with Alex Tudor, the pair added 128 runs for the seventh wicket to bring some respectability to the score. Tudor (56) was run out attempting a quick single to Mahmood fielding at short fine leg in the 41st over (200-7). Hollioake departed for 66 in the 43rd over following a neat catch by Schofield at deep mid-wicket (213-8). Murtagh and Doshi added 22 more runs before the close. One sensed that a score of 235 was inadequate for the size of the ground.

With Lancashire's batting confidence at an all time low, a positive response was crucial. Chilton and Sutcliffe applied themselves well and maintained the asking rate of 5.24 with little, or no concern. Batty alternated his bowlers without any success as Lancashire posted the hundred up in the 18th over. Although Sutcliffe started slowly, he reached his half century 8 deliveries sooner than Chilton (49-57). The opening stand reached 223 before the first wicket fell - Mark Chilton caught for 115 by Brown off the bowling of Benning. This was a new record for any wicket in the League for Lancashire, surpassing the 197 by John Crawley and Graham Lloyd against Durham at Old Trafford in 1997. It was also Chilton's career best score in the competition. Paul Horton (4) only survived four balls before returning to the dressing room - leg before to Benning in the 36th over (227-2). There were just enough runs required for Iain Sutcliffe to hit a boundary to bring up his 100 from 106 balls to secure an eight wicket victory at the same time (Also Sutcliffe's career best). Unfortunately, with Glamorgan's success against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl, the title is all but mathematically gone. However, division one cricket has been guaranteed, unlike the four day game.
