Scorecard: | Kent v Lancashire |
Summary
Lancashire suffered their first away defeat in eleven matches in this competition, when the Kent Spitfires handed out a comprehensive lesson in the art of one day cricket. Once again, Warren Hegg lost the toss and was asked to field. Retrospectively, that summed up Lancashire's day. It started badly and ended up a total disaster.
The early wicket of Carberry (8) merely paved the way for Andrew Symonds to play a longer innings at the crease (9-1). His total domination of all of the visitors bowlers was in evidence from the word go. He reached his fifty from just 48 balls, and went on to post his century from 81 deliveries. By the time he was dismissed in the 36th over, his tally was 146 runs from just 110 balls (17 x 4 & 4 x 6). Symonds periodically rode his luck on the way to his highest one day score for Kent. He was dropped three times. On each occasion, the bowler was unable to hold a sharp caught and bowled chance (35, 111 and 128).
Robert Key (21) was well caught at leg gully by Mal Loye (78-2), and Alex Loudon was bowled by Mahmood for nought. At 80 for 3, Lancashire still remained in the contest. Unfortunately, Matthew Walker joined Symonds at the crease and played the perfect supporting innings. He regularly stole a quick single to keep Symonds on strike. The pair added 170 for the fourth wicket - another Kent record. Eventually, Symonds was caught on the long-on boundary by Chapple attempting another maximum hit for his 150 (250-4). David Fulton returned to the pavilion with just 2 runs to his name after being hit with a full toss "beamer" from Steve Crook on his hand.
Matthew Walker passed his half century from 61 balls in the 38th over. The scoreboard already reading 262 for 4. Sajid Mahmood removed Tredwell for 5 two overs later. His spell of 9 overs, 4 for 42 was truly outstanding under the circumstances. Dennington was bowled by Mahmood without scoring with just his second ball. In between time, Walker (61) was run out attempting a suicidal second run to Kyle Hogg on the deep square leg boundary (294-7). To the surprise of all of the very large crowd, Kent failed to bat all of their overs. They lost their last 3 wickets in the 45th over with successive deliveries - but not a hat-trick! Cusden (1) was run out by Hegg and Chapple on the 3rd ball, O'Brien (19) was caught by Chilton on the fourth ball, and Trott (0) was caught by Schofield with the fifth ball (301 all out). Glen Chapple is technically on a hat-trick with his next delivery.
To stand any chance of overhauling the hosts score, Lancashire needed a good start - 6.71 runs per over. Dominic Cork opened with Mal Loye - presumably as a pinch hitter and a replacement for the injured Sutcliffe (He sustained a leg injury whilst in the field). Quite incredibly, Loye was bowled by Cusden's with the first ball of the innings. Truthfully, there was no way back. Cork was merely a wicket in the waiting. The choice to place him at the top of the order considering his batting form this season, and the fact that other lower order players have been successful with the pinch hitting role - defied belief (Chapple & Crook). He duly obliged with a woeful pull across the line in the 6th over and lost his middle stump (29-2).
Stuart Law remained Lancashire's only hope of pulling off the impossible victory. He maintained the high asking rate courtesy of a number of excellent boundaries. His reached his fifty from 52 balls in the 12th over. His wicket in the following over left the home supporters overjoyed. Law chipped tamely to Symonds at mid-off (72-3). With the run rate running out of control and Lancashire only left with a number of "all-round" players to bat, there was little else to enjoy other than the late evening sunshine. Defeat was more inevitable than night turning to day by just the 16th over when Crook (3) was caught by Carberry (86-4).
Mark Chilton was unable to maintain an aggressive scoring rate whilst steadying Lancashire's innings - this was an impossible combination. With 32 runs to his name, he gained a leading edge to a delivery from Tredwell and was easily caught by Walker at mid-wicket (131-5). Sutcliffe entered the fray with Crook acting as his runner in the 25th over. Together with Glen Chapple, the duo added 34 runs in 6 overs before Chapple was cruelly run out backing up too far. Sutcliffe struck the ball straight down the wicket and Tredwell just touched the ball with his finger. No wonder Chapple (35) slammed his bat into the ground en route to the pavilion. It summed up not only Lancashire's luck on the day, but summarized their overall plight since arriving at Tunbridge Wells (165-6).
Lancashire's last four wickets fell before the end of the 43rd over. The lower order players all performed with great pride in dire circumstances. Schofield scored 27 runs from just 25 balls, Hegg scored 29 from 21 deliveries including the only six of the innings. Kyle Hogg was the last player out for 3, leaving Mahmood not out 5. Matthew Walker collected 3 late wickets from just 26 deliveries and the Spitfires gained revenge for the defeat at Old Trafford earlier in the season - or should I say Andrew Symonds beat Lancashire by 56 runs!Key Notes of the Day
