Match report day 3: Middx v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Middlesex v Lancashire

Summary for Day 3

If Lancashire's performance on the second day was below par and lacked a cutting edge, the teams performance on the third day was truly outstanding. By the close of play, the visitors has passed their opponents score by 26 runs with 9 wickets still in tact. A draw now looks the most likely outcome.

Glen Chapple gained a little extra bounce to force Andrew Strauss to edge a catch to Warren Hegg in the fourth over (266-6). The Middlesex captain added just 3 runs to his overnight score. David Nash fell leg before wicket for 19 with the score on 294. Lance Klusener hit a six and two fours before smashing a low catch to Chilton at point (301-8). Chad Keegan offered a simple caught and bowled to Dominic Cork in the 92nd over. Quite amazingly, he stood his ground for nearly 5 seconds before walking back to the pavilion - heavens only knows why (326-9), Nantie Hayward tried to hit every delivery out of the ground rather than working the ball around the gaps to attain a fourth batting point. Needless to say, he was clean bowled by Cork (Leg and middle), who finished with 7 for 120. Together with Glen Chapple, the pair bowled unchanged for 105 minutes (Until the conclusion of Middlesex's innings). Overall Middlesex gained a useful lead of 102.

Lancashire's openers negotiated a tricky 20 minute session before lunch - 25 for 0. After the break, Chilton and Sutcliffe continued to bat with enormous common sense. Both players dug deep, showing true determination for the team. Despite the weather forecast stating better prospects as the day progressed, the clouds steadily built completing obliterating the suns rays by mid afternoon. Hayward changed to the Nursery end for the first time in the match. Soon afterwards, he trapped Sutcliffe leg before wicket for 34 (75-1) still trailing by 27 runs.

Mal Loye joined Mark Chilton at the crease. Chilton was showing great maturity (And also making me eat my words regarding his ability to open Lancashire's batting - see day 1). Loye also demonstrated great control. By the time bad light stopped play at 3.52pm, Lancashire found themselves on level par at 102 for 1.

Only 30 minutes play was possible after the tea interval due to poor light (No rain). In this time Lancashire moved along to 128 for 1, while Middlesex's over rate dropped to minus 4. An excellent day at the office by Lancashire.
