Match report day 2: Warks v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Warwickshire v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

With 29 balls of the second days play remaining, Lancashire were cruising along at 264 for 1 in pursuit of Warwickshire's 449 all out. The home side were desperately struggling in the field due to injuries (Brown and Penney not fielding and Richardson suffering from a leg injury also on/off the field). Warwickshire's "fill-in" bowlers were carrying out the bowling duties at the end of a long hot day when suddenly Mal Loye offered a simple catch to long-off. In a moment of total madness, Lancashire decided to send in Gary Keedy as night watchman. A bizarre decision considering the circumstances. 4 balls later, Keedy returned to the pavilion. In the following over, Chilton shouldered arms to a ball which nipped back and removed his off stump. Warwickshire players and supporters were delighted as the visitors were reduced to 266 for 4 (3 wickets in 7 balls). Law and Hooper negotiated the last few overs without any further scares. Earlier in the day, Lancashire removed Warwickshire's last 4 wickets for 107. At the close of play, Lancashire trailed the hosts by 171 runs. The third day promises another interesting day against a weakened bowling line-up and batting on a perfect strip

Bowling Performance of the Day

Gary Keedy removed the last two Warwickshire wickets in the space of 8 balls. He finished with figures of 2 for 84. Kyle Hogg induced a poor stroke from Keith Piper in the 6th over of the day - caught by Hooper low at first slip. Hogg finished with 2 for 66. Steven Crook picked up his first championship wicket in his 11th over - Betts leg before wicket. Lancashire bowled well on the second morning considering the pitch remained very unresponsive

Batting Performance of the Day

Mark Chilton scored his sixth championship hundred of the season. His hundred came from 170 balls (16 x 4). Initially Chilton struggled against the new ball attack. He did not appear comfortable at the crease and was fortunate not to drag the ball onto his stumps before reaching 30. Chilton lost his of stump with 23 balls remaining of the days play having reached 121 (20 x 4). He seemed to lose his concentration following the double wicket maiden in the previous over (Loye and Keedy). Loye scored a steady 102 runs (10 x 4 & 2 x 6) before losing his wicket to a poor stroke (Caught on the long off boundary). The pair added 222 runs for the second wicket

Fielding Performance of the Day

Nothing significant to report during the 2 hours which Lancashire spent in the field. Hooper held two straight forward catches at first slip and short mid-wicket. No missed chances and no mis-fields

Highlights of the Day

  • Steven Crook's first wicket for Lancashire
  • Dismissing Warwickshire for 449 - the pitch suggested a higher score
  • The partnership between Chilton and Loye (222)

Lowlights of the Day

  • Lancashire narrowly missed a third bowling point by 4 balls
  • Warwickshire's very slow bowling rate - the game finished 30 minutes late
  • Mal Loye's badly timed dismissal
  • The decision to send in Gary Keedy as night watchman
  • Mark Chilton just missed out on his top score (125)

Contentious Discussion Points of the Day

  • Why did Mal Loye play such a rash stroke with so few balls remaining in the days play?
  • Why did Lancashire send in Gary Keedy as nightwatchman considering the weakened bowling attack and the lifeless pitch?
  • Melvyn Betts was not out leg before wicket - the ball was going well down the leg side Note - Dougie Brown will not bowl during this match due to the injury he sustained on the first day. He batted with a runner
