Summary for Day 2

When John Wood returned to the pavilion at 5.30pm with Lancashire struggling on 262 for 9, a vast majority of spectators took the opportunity to leave the ground. They were keen to avoid the football traffic. Those supporters who decided to stay and watch the cricket were richly rewarded with an exhilarating 10th wicket stand between Carl Hooper and Gary Keedy. The pair added 79 runs in just 78 minutes as Lancashire gained a narrow 4 run advantage over Surrey. Earlier in the day, Mark Currie and Stuart Law added 109 for the third wicket as the hosts developed a strong platform. Law's demise at 3.22pm signalled yet another middle collapse as three further batsmen returned to the pavilion before 4pm. At tea Lancashire were 218 for 6 and Surrey seemed to be set for a useful first innings lead. Hegg, Martin and Wood all contributed valuable runs before Carl Hooper destroyed Surrey's bowlers and potentially ruined their championship dream

 

Bowling Performance of the Day

Lancashire only required 17 deliveries to conclude Surrey's first innings on the second morning. Batty added just 2 runs while Tim Murtagh scored 5 runs before being clean bowled by Peter Martin, who finished with 3 for 54

 

Batting Performance of the Day

There were a number of batting hero's on the second day. Making his debut for the first team in the championship, Mark Currie scored 56 runs from 152 balls (6 x 4). Mark appeared to be at ease with Surrey's bowling attack although he did survive a drop catch at 2nd slip on 45, and a run out opportunity on 55. Stuart Law scored 67 runs from 75 balls (10 x 4). Currie and Law added 109 runs for the third wicket. Carl Hooper scored a brilliant 114 runs from 147 balls (11 x 4 & 5 x 6) - he moved from 49 not out with Gary Keedy as his last partner at the crease. The pair added 79 priceless runs with Keedy surviving 36 deliveries for just one run (8 extras). Surrey were completely devoid of ideas how to cope with Hooper. Lancashire's overseas hero turned a certain first innings deficit into a 4 run advantage

 

Fielding Performance of the Day

Lancashire only fielded for 15 minutes on the second day. Nothing significant to report in this period of time. Surrey generally fielded in a tidy manner, but must have dreaded the moment when Tim Murtagh dropped Carl Hooper on 88. Earlier in the day, Ian Salisbury and Graham Thorpe missed one of the easiest run out opportunities of the season. With Mark Currie trapped in the middle of the wicket, they somehow contrived to miss the stumps with a couple of attempts
