Match report day 2: Leics v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Leicestershire v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

At the sake of sound boring, Lancashire dominated the second day of this Championship match against Leicester. The days play started slightly late after an untimely burst of rain just before the start of play. The hosts' bowlers failed to use the cloud cover and a sweating pitch to make early inroads. In fact, Leicestershire's bowlers even failed to remove night watchman Keedy until 12.37pm. This failure set an interesting tone for the day. Loye battled hard during the morning session, while Law carried on from where he left off a few days previous. By mid-afternoon, with Hooper and Law in charge in the middle, Leicestershire had all but given up taking the next wicket - they were left hoping that one of Lancashire's overseas players would make a mistake. With the weather forecast offering good sunshine over the next couple of days, the visitors should be able to exploit the assistance from the wicket much better than Leicestershire, and go on to collect 22 points at some stage on Saturday

Bowling Performance of the Day

Truthfully, only ex-Lancastrian DeFreitas bowled with any real spirit and accuracy. He completed 28 overs (More than any other bowler) for just 51 runs & 3 wickets. Unfortunately for Leicestershire, the back-up bowlers lacked a cutting edge. Amin bowled 2 distinctly third rate spells of spin from the pavilion end and conceded 68 runs from just 12 overs (Including one maiden!). Maddy and Masters tried hard but never came close to causing an upset. Malcolm looked distinctly weary in the field during the final session and did not bowl - perhaps he was suffering after 8 weeks off

Batting Performance of the Day

Carl Hooper smashed 88 runs (5 x 4, 1 x 5 - courtesy of 4 overthrows & 3 x 6). His third maximum hit from Amin's bowling was enormous. It cleared the upper tier of the pavilion and finished up in Grace Road. Stuart Law reached 150 shortly before the close of play (20 x 4 & 2 x 6) with a beautiful straight drive. Combined with Law's last innings against Warwickshire, the batsman is now 386 runs undefeated! The partnership between Hooper and Law reached 195 just before the close of play - fantastic viewing!

Fielding Performance of the Day

Leicestershire's fielders wilted during the course of the day. This was not due to the heat though. They suffered heavily at the hands of Hooper and Law, and were generally left chasing shadows. During the final session, the fielders stood in near silence - no encouragement, no clapping hands and no self belief

Highlights of the Day

  • Carl Hooper's huge six over the top of the pavilion. It cleared the ground and finished up in Grace Road.
  • Stuart Law reaching 386 runs since losing his wicket - 236 not out versus Warwickshire + 150 not out versus Leicestershire
  • Establishing a lead of 73 by close of play and building a match winning position - again!

Lowlight of the Day

Nothing significant - It would have been satisfying to have seen Mal Loye reach 50 - in truth he battled hard for his 45 but never appeared to be in complete control

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Following the early morning rain, the start time was excessively delayed until 11.55am. In truth, the covers should have been removed and the field of play made good by 11.45am latest. Once again, the Leicestershire ground staff were incredibly slow to put the covers on during the rain. They seemed more concerned with the one-day pitch (Warwickshire August 3rd) that the bowlers run-ups and the square
