Summary for Day 2

Lancashire dominated all three sessions on the second day of this match against Warwickshire. In terms of a boxing match, the referee would have stopped the contest during the morning session. By 6.30pm, Warwickshire's batsmen headed to the sanctuary of the dressing room. Their wounds in urgent need of attention. Quite simply, Lancashire out-played their opponent in all departments. Warwickshire's bowlers were tame in the extreme. Their fielding tired and lame. Their batsmen gutless. The home side pounced on these weaknesses to exploit a huge lead by close of play (Warwickshire trail by 383 runs with just 2 first innings wickets in hand). The follow-on beckons and Lancashire sense their third victory of the season. One can only hope the weather does not prevent the inevitable outcome during the last 2 days play

 

Bowling Performance of the Day

No weak links were on show in the bowling department on the second day. Wood removed the crucial wicket of Knight to start the destruction. Martin bowled Warwickshire captain Powell by removing his middle stump. He beat the bat on countless occasions. Keedy bowled 20 overs and only conceded 28 runs - including 3 x 4 & 1 x 6!! - 11 scoring shots against Keedy only from 120 deliveries. Hooper captured 2 wickets - one either side of the tea interval. Both wickets (Troughton and Smith) were caught by Hegg standing-up at the wicket. However, Glen Chapple's 4 different spells from both ends of the ground turned the match in Lancashire's favour. His dismissal of Ian Bell epitomized his endeavour. He left Bell flat on his back in the batting crease after inducing a feint edge through to the keeper - a real snorter of a delivery. Hegg was forced to remove Chapple from the attack as bad light threatened to stop play around 6pm

 

Batting Performance of the Day

This honour is shared by Stuart Law 236 not out (32 x 4 & 2 x 6), who beat his previous highest score of 218 for Lancashire, and Glen Chapple who blasted 132 (Equaling his score at Chelmsford earlier this season) from 157 balls (20 x 4 & 2 x 6). The pair added 228 for the 6th wicket - the second highest sixth wicket partnership at Old Trafford on record (Highest 278 by Iddon and Butterworth in 1932).

 

Fielding Performance of the Day

Warren Hegg held 5 super catches behind the stumps. He also made numerous fine stops as the ball varied greatly in its bounce. He never conceded one bye - a true testimony to his ability behind the stumps. As captain, he rotated his bowlers to gain maximum benefit. He shrewdly introduced Hooper just before the tea interval and was rewarded second ball. The reintroduction of Chapple after the tea break turned the match heavily in favour of the home side

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

A "Supporter" in "A" stand criticized the "Unnecessary" delay in the 67th over, when Iain Sutcliffe suffered a leg injury whilst fielding at deep square leg. As Sutcliffe ran in to field the ball, he fell to the floor clutching his right calf. Hegg rightly took exception to the untimely comment. He shouted toward the spectator and suggested that he should leave the ground and go home. Obviously, Sutcliffe needed medical attention and limped slowly from the field
