Match report day 2: Kent v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Kent v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

The similarity between the first and second days play was almost identical. 5 wickets in the morning session, a big partnership (128) in the afternoon, a whirlwind innings from Geraint Jones (92), the bowlers toiling in the heat with an aging ball, and a late collapse. All credit to Lancashire's players for sticking to the task in hand and attaining an eighty run first innings lead. With the bounce extremely unpredictable and the pitch covered with various footmarks, batting will undoubtedly become more difficult. Gary Keedy must have been delighted to see Sheriyar running up the wicket (Warned) to offer even more assistance in the fourth innings. If Lancashire can acquire a lead in the region of 350, and the weather holds up, they should be able to gain their first championship victory.

Bowling Performance of the Day

Well done to Gary Keedy. He collected 5 wickets for 99 runs including 4 bowled out victims. He bowled exclusively from the Pavilion End and utilised Sheriyar's footmarks to his benefit. This was Keedy's second major wicket haul of the season following his 6 for 68 against Middlesex at Lords, and fully justifies his selection ahead of Chris Schofield.

Batting Performance of the Day

Under extremely difficult conditions, Mal Loye scored a super half century. After the early loss of Chilton and Swann, Loye steadied the ship and accumulated runs at a sedate and sensible pace. Like most other batsmen, Loye played and missed periodically. He also survived the occasional low bouncing ball which shot through at ankle height - every batsmans nightmare.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Mal Loye worked very hard in the outfield. He saved several runs with excellent diving stops on the boundary, and his throwing was very accurate. Glen Chapple's one handed diving catch at wide mid-on to remove Sheriyar was sensational.

Highlights of the Day

  • Removing David Fulton with the second ball of the day.
  • The dismissal of Greg Blewett for nought - all 3 overseas players failed to score!
  • Reducing Kent to 91 for 5 and turning the game on its head.
  • Glen Chapple's stunning catch to remove Sheriyar.
  • Establishing an 80 run lead - this could be vital as the game progresses

Lowlight of the Day

Mark Chilton did not look happy in the opening role and fell cheaply again.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

After Fulton's second ball dismissal (Leg before wicket), the non striker (Carberry) appeared to contest the decision with umpire Holder. Quite rightly, he walked away from Carberry while gesturing that he was in charge.
