Match report day 2: Surrey v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Surrey v Lancashire

Summary for Day 2

On a bitterly cold and overcast day, Lancashire were restricted to just 47.4 overs play, in which time they scored an additional 208 runs for the loss 8 wickets. Mal Loye and Stuart Law partnership for the third wicket reached 282. Andrew Flintoff, Glen Chapple and Mark Chilton all added quick runs during the afternoon session. However, with the light closing in Lancashire could do little else but occupy the crease and build a formidable total. If Hegg had chosen to declare, Surrey would have been unable to take to the field.

Bowling Performance of the Day

Ian Salisbury bowled exceptionally well considering the conditions and the absence of spin partner Saqlain Mushtaq (Injured on the first day). At one stage he bowled 12 overs for just 17 runs, and finished with 4 for 116.

Batting Performance of the Day

The honor was evenly shared between Law adding (40) Loye (22) Chilton (28) and Chapple (32). However, Andrew Flintoff's 43 runs from 39 balls including 2 x 6 and 6 x 4 took the overall prize for the day

Fielding Performance of the Day

No significant contribution other than 2 straight forward catches by Batty, who was also very tidy behind the stumps.

Highlight of the Day

The partnership of 282 between Loye and Law. Flintoff's quick fire 43, and listening to Surrey's discontented supporters!

Lowlight of the Day

Just failing to reach 600, and the amount of time loss to bad light

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Was the hour and a half lost in the morning session really necessary? Yes, it was darker than ideal conditions demand but play did seem possible. Without the light meters on the scoreboard, the public has to estimate the conditions - A poor new ruling. Did Lancashire choose to leave the field, or did the umpires dictate the situation?
