Match report: Sussex v Lancs in NCL 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Sussex v Lancashire

Summary

Lancashire collected their eighth consecutive win in the NCL this season courtesy of high quality fielding, tight bowling and sensible batting. In truth, the game was all over very early on when the home side found themselves 49 for 5 in the 18th over. Following on from Saturdays disastrous defeat against Worcester (C&G Cup), the team bounced back in the best possible way. Having lost the toss and being asked to bowl (Surprise!), the visitors tore into Sussex's batting line-up. Only Robin Martin-Jenkins batted well (36 - 4 x 4). Without his intervention the match would have finished even earlier than 8.38pm - the floodlights were only just needed. Requiring just 113 runs to win @ 2.51 per over, Loye exploited the exceptionally short boundary to the scoreboard side (52 yards) to maximum effect. Needless to say following 8 straight victories, Lancashire moved back to the top of table, and success against Middlesex at Old Trafford next week should ensure promotion

Bowling Performance of the Day

With the exception of Sajid Mahmood, all of Lancashire's bowlers performed very well. Peter Martin claimed the first three wickets within the space of 14 deliveries and finished with 3 for 31. John Wood was Lancashire's most economical bowler - 2 for 19 from 9 overs including 3 no-balls! Carl Hooper bowled one ball and removed the last wicket. However, Lancashire's best performer of the day was Kyle Hogg. He bowled one spell of 9 overs to finish with 4 for 24. He only conceded 2 boundaries - welcome back

Batting Performance of the Day Mal Loye carried on from where he left off at Worcester 4 days previous. He smashed 9 x 4 & 2 x 6 in his innings of 58. He was dropped by Zuiderent with 28 to his name - a difficult catch running back to the boundary. The drop also cost 4 runs. It came as a surprise when he thinly edged Davis to Ambrose in the 21st over

Fielding Performance of the Day

One word describes Lancashire's fielding - Outstanding. No drop chances and no mis-fields. Lancashire's two fielding stars Carl Hooper and Chris Schofield were both faultless and brilliant. Hooper held two catches fielding at second slip. The first to dismiss Adams was comfortable at waist high. However, his second catch was unbelievable. He dipped low to his right to remove Tim Ambrose. Since his arrival at he club, Hooper has only dropped one opportunity (Scotland NCL). Chris Schofield held a superb catch fielding at point to remove Sussex's danger man Robin Martin-Jenkins.

Highlights of the Day

Too many to mention! - Best moments
  • Murray Goodwin being clean bowled 5th ball of the game
  • Carl Hooper's catch to remove Tim Ambrose
  • Chris Schofield's catch to dismiss Martin-Jenkins
  • Mal Loye's 2 sixes and his powerful boundary from Billy Taylor's free-hit delivery
  • The overall attitude and response from the team following the semi-final defeat against Worcestershire
  • Moving back to the top of the table

Lowlight of the Day

Sajid Mahmood conceded 36 runs from just 5 overs otherwise it was a perfect evening

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Nothing significant - several Sussex players refused to walk after blatant edges to Hegg. They waited for the umpires decision. Hopkinson was not impressed with his leg before wicket verdict especially as only 2 players even bothered to appeal
