Scorecard: | Lancashire v Durham |
Summary
Following the fiasco performance against Derbyshire the night before (20/20 cup defeat by 7 wickets), Lancashire's players were provided with an early opportunity to extinguish the "Nightmare", and demonstrate to the "Faithful" supporters that the team were back on track. Having restricted Durham to just 197 runs, Lancashire collapsed to 58 for 5 with some desperately poor shots. The crowd sat in a stunned silence as another painfully heavy defeat beckoned. Enter Glen Chapple with the "Pick-me-up" tonic. However, with the rain closing in, Lancashire were keeping a close eye on both the winning target of 198 and the PAR score - excellent tension - who needs 20/20!!
Bowling Performance of the Day
Glen Chapple finished with 3 for 38 (2 wickets coming in the frantic finale courtesy of skied catches). Chris Schofield combined well with Carl Hooper to severely slow the Durham scoring rate. Almost unnoticed, John Wood bowled 8 overs for just 25 runs. As usual John bowled with immense effort and accuracy.
Batting Performance of the Day
"Hats-off" to Glen Chapple. Without any question of doubt this was Glen's greatest one-day batting performance. He arrived at the crease with Lancashire reeling at 24 for 4 (Technically 5 with loss of Sutcliffe). Schofield departed shortly afterwards (58 for 5). However, Chapple demonstrated his experience by combining singles (36) with occasional boundaries, and ensured he was still batting at the "Death". He blasted 15 runs from Killeen's 8th over to steer Lancashire to the brink of victory.
Fielding Performance of the Day
John Wood's catch (From his own bowling) to dismiss Gary Pratt was very impressive. The ball travelled an enormous distance in to the air. Wood did not have to move very far from his follow through stride. He showed super composure to hold the ball just above his head.
Highlights of the Day
- Chapple's superb innings - including a huge six from Killeen's bowling in the 43rd over - a true champagne moment.
- The determination shown by the lower order to support Glen.
- Lancashire in second place in the league table - promotion?

Lowlights of the Day
- The injury sustained by Iain Sutcliffe in the 3rd over. Plunkett's delivery somehow worked it's way between the gap in the front of the helmet. Sutcliffe sustained a broken cheek bone.
- Despite not conceding a wide until the 24th over, Lancashire still managed to bowl 9 wides in the Durham innings.
- The very poor batting from the upper order.
- As the poor weather closed in, Lancashire were marginally behind on the Duckworth-Lewis par score - a truly horrible way to lose. Thankfully, the umpires played through a couple of short showers.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day
When chasing the ball to the boundary, Thorpe was unable to perform a "Clean" stop - he was in contact with the rope. When consulted by the umpire, Thorpe claimed his innocence and uncertainty - where have all the honest players gone?
