Match report: Durham v Lancs in NCL 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Durham v Lancashire

Summary

Lancashire collected their first victory of the season thanks to a combination of power and patience. Having restricted the home side to 186 for 8 from 44 overs, the visitors appeared to be in a tight corner on 78 for 4 from 22 overs. With Kyle Hogg unable to bat due to a calf injury, and the run rate approaching 5 an over, the visitors took control of the game by the throat.

Bowling Performance of the Day

On his return to the first team, Gary Yates completed 9 overs for 29 runs. He never conceded a boundary, and only allowed singles to be scored from his first 8 overs. He never bowled any loose deliveries and captured the wicket of Danny Law.

Batting Performance of the Day

The honours were shared by Alec Swann 73 runs from 102 (An extremely crucial innings combining immense concentration and selective stroke play) and Andrew Flintoff 42 runs from 24 balls (A display of utter power and contempt for the bowlers). Together the pair added 64 runs for the fifth wicket, including a fifty partnership from just 36 balls.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Steven Crook (Fielding as a substitute for Kyle Hogg) moved sharply at mid-on to run out Neil Killeen without scoring. As usual, Warren Hegg held two smart catches behind the stumps.

Highlight of the Day

Andrew Flintoff's innings of 42 from just 24 balls (8 x 4 and 1 x 6) was breathtaking - 12 of the deliveries which he faced were not scored from!! - His innings changed the direction of the match

Lowlight of the Day

Kyle Hogg's sickening injury sustained in the 28th over. His studs became rooted to the pitch while chasing/fielding a ball on the boundary. He fell to he ground immediately injuring his calf muscle. He is unlikely to play for a couple of weeks.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Nothing significant - however, Stuart Law was not pleased to be adjudged caught behind
