Scorecard: | Devon v Lancashire |
Summary
Lancashire eased their way to the fourth round of the Cheltenham and Gloucester cup with a comfortable 9 wicket victory against Devon at Exmouth. The ground, set in idyllic tranquil surroundings, combined with almost unbroken sunshine, and the friendliest host, ensured a perfect days' cricket for all of the spectators present. In truth, the result was a foregone conclusion after just 75 minutes of play. By this time Devon had limped along to 61 for 6. The match was destined to finish early, thus allowing sufficient time for a stroll along the promenade. All credit must go to Neil Hancock who ensured Devon maintained their dignity, and provided Lancashire's batsmen with, if not a difficult challenge, some useful practice ahead of the four day game against Middlesex at Lords.
Bowling Performance of the Day
John Wood bowled with enormous passion and spirit. He collected 4 wickets for just 33 runs in two spells from the Pavilion End. His figures were slightly spoilt in his seventh over, when he conceded 11 runs - a testimony to the accuracy of the other 7.2 overs which he bowled.
Batting Performance of the Day
Iain Sutcliffe scored 89 runs from 127 balls including nine boundaries. He never looked in any trouble apart from a difficult dropped chance offered when he was on 37. His partnership with Mark Chilton reached 166 for the first wicket
Fielding Performance of the Day
The outfield was very uneven. The incline toward the Pavilion End was surprisingly steep. Andrew Flintoff held 3 catches. two at slip, and one at mid-on. His catch to dismiss Ian Bishop was a super low diving catch tumbling forward. Flintoff did miss a half chance at second slip in the second over of the day.
Highlight of the Day
Listening to the Man of the Match adjudicator refer to the visitors as "Yorkshire"!
Lowlight of the Day
Hearing that Durham had beaten Berkshire by 8 wickets. I would have dearly liked Lancashire to have travelled to play the fourth round tie in my home town of Reading! - now I have a 10 hour round trip to Chester-Le-Street on May 28th.
Contentious Discussion Point of the Day
There were no contentious events to report. However, I hope the spectator taken ill at the Sea End just before the first ball was bowled has recovered.

Lancashire Man of the Match
3 contenders - Andrew Flintoff 3 wickets and 3 catches, Iain Sutcliffe 89 not out, or John Wood 4 wickets for 33 runs. My choice John Wood - he steered Lancashire on course with an exceptional opening spell of 3 for 20 from 6 overs.
