BUTTERWORTH, Wilfred Selkirk.

Born at Rochdale, Lancashire, 11th October 1855.
Died at Rochdale, Lancashire, 9th April 1908.
The son of James Butterworth, of Rake Bank, Wardleworth, Rochdale, Lancashire, he was educated at Lancing, where he was in the cricket eleven 1871-74 and the football eleven 1872-74. He was first chosen for Lancashire in 1876 and played in nine matches for them between then and 1882. Later in 1882 he is reported to have left for Texas, U.S.A., where he stayed for some years.
The 1881 Census finds him at home at Rake Bank, with his father James, aged 60, a magistrate paper stock merchant, and his mother Anne, also aged 60. There are present three unmarried sons, Bernard, aged 35, a solicitor, Wilfred Selkirk, aged 25 and Charles Philip Edward, aged 19. There are two unmarried daughters, Maria Louisa, aged 31, and Laura Frances, aged 29. There are three domestic servants.
