Guidelines for Submitting Scorecards to CricketArchive
(last updated on 17 October 2016)Background:
Text scorecards need to be converted into the CricketArchive database. The web pages are then produced from this database.
This means that scorecards for conversion do not look exactly like they do when you see the finished web page, and so can be typed in without putting in entries for some fields where data is not available (for example, wides and no-balls for the bowlers, or minutes and balls faced for the batsmen).
Description:
This page contains notes on the text format the scorecard to table conversion script accepts.Detail of text format:
Cards can have fields separated by tabs and/or multiple spaces if this makes it easier for you to type the scorecard in but as far as our conversion program is concerned fields do not need to line up unless specifically stated. The scorecard is divided into several distinct parts.Header Section:
- The teams in the match are separated by ' v ' (not vs)
This does not need to be the first line in the file but any lines before it will be ignored by the upload program. - The team names and player names need to be consistent throughout the scorecard
(for example, "Australia Under-19s" all the time and not just "Australia" sometimes). - The team header line is followed by lines denoting other match details.
The lines can be in any order.
Lines are not required if details not known.- Venue:
- Date:
- Result:
The result line may contain the phrase "(D/L Method)" for a match which was decided by a rain rules
The result line may contain the phrase "(one innings match)" for a match which would normally be two innings but is played under one-day rules
The result line may contain the phrase "(one innings 40-over match)" for a match which would normally be two innings but is played under one-day limited overs rules
The result line may contain the phrase "(rain prevented further play)" to mimic a play-cricket card which would be abandoned in their terminology
The result line may contain the words "to be replayed" to indicate this which will not calculate points if it is a match that would otherwise have had points awarded.
The result can be "teamname won by losing fewer wickets".
The result can be "teamname won on faster scoring rate".
The result can be "teamname won by a concession" - note that this means that there was play in the match but one side gave up.
The result can be "teamname won by a walkover" - note that this means that there was no play, because, for example, one side failed to turn up.
Details of any method used to determine a winning team when the match itself did not give a winner are now shown in brackets on the result line and not in the notes section
The permitted wordings are:
teamname won by bowl-out (details of the bowl-out should appear in the notes)
teamname won in the super over (details of the super over now appear in the body of the card)
teamname won on first innings
teamname won on toss of a coin
teamname won on better record in qualifying
teamname won on disqualification (this one can override a match which did have a definite result)
teamname retained the trophy
The two teams shared the trophy
- Toss:
The Toss line only needs the team name (the toss decision is inferred from the scorecard)
If no toss is made use None and put a note saying why. - Umpires:
Names can be separated by ' & ', ' , ' or ' and '
Match officials (umpires, referees, scorers) will be assumed to come from the country staging the match unless indicated otherwise with a team name or country abbreviation in brackets after each official. Team names, as opposed to countries, will normally be applicable to scorers only. When both officials are from the same outside country they both need to have the note.
Example:
Umpires: DB Hair (Aus) and BF Bowden Scorers: J Bloggs (Kent) and B Smith (Lancashire) - TV Umpire:
- Third Umpire:
TV and Third Umpire are synonymous
- Fourth Umpire:
- Reserve Umpire:
Fourth and Reserve Umpire are synonymous
- [Match|Tournament] Referee:
- Scorer[s]:
- Official Scorer[s]:
- Man of the Match:
- Player of the Series:
If an event award is specified (eg Man of the Series) for a player who is not actually playing in the match that player's team needs to appear in brackets, and must be present even if the player's team is one of the teams in the match. - Players per side:
Use when the number of players on both sides is not 11
If both sides have the same number of players then use a line of the form
Players per side: 12
If the teams have different numbers of players then use a line of the form
Players per side: Australia 10; England 15
Note that the separator is a semicolon
If the number of player to bat is not 11 you must specify that too:
Players per side: 12 (12 to bat)
Players per side: Australia 12 (12 to bat); Grantham 22 (22 to bat)
- Points:
The format is
Points: Nottinghamshire 14, Surrey 0 Points: Nottinghamshire 14 (Batting 3, Bowling 2), Surrey 0 Points: Nottinghamshire 14 (Batting 3, Bowling 2, slow over rate -3), Surrey 0 Anything in brackets which is not Batting or Bowling will be assumed to be a points adjustment
Note that the separator is a comma - Close of Play:
- This line should be followed by one or more lines of the format:
Day 1:
A line is needed for each day even if no data is known.
If there is no play then it should say 'No play'
Repeating the score from the previous day means that play took place but no runs scored.
The team innings number must be specified.
If individual players are known they should be added in parentheses with ? if their scores are not known
If players not known they may be omitted.
Optionally a number of overs may be given too.
Examples:
Day 1: Hampshire (1) 213/6
Day 2: Hampshire (1) 216/6 (Poore 27*, Smith 35*)
Day 2: Hampshire (1) 216/6 (Poore 27*, Smith ?*)
Day 2: Hampshire (1) 216/6 (Poore 27*)
the above means only one not-out batsman
Day 2: Hampshire (2) 216/6 (Poore 27*, 25.5 overs)
- This line should be followed by one or more lines of the format:
Each innings is laid out in order underneath the previous one (not side by side where a team batted twice in the match).
If the match is decided by a Super Over then the details appear in the same format after the match proper with super over innings in the innings header and no did not bats as teams need only decide their third batsman when a wicket falls.
Each innings has data in the sequence
- innings header
- batting details
- did not bat details
- team did not bat
- innings forfeited
- fall of wickets details
- bowling analyses
- innings header
For a single innings match use
TeamName innings
For multiple innings matches use
TeamName 1st|first|2nd|second innings
If a team followed-on then put 'following on' after the word innings.
For limited overs matches where there are reductions from the originally scheduled number of overs or a revised target for the innings of the team batting second, these should be given on this line in the format shown in the examples below
England Under-19s innings (47 overs maximum)
Pakistan Under-19s innings (target: 213 runs from 47 overs)
Following this there may optionally be details of other fields present on each batting details line
The headers are R (always first) and then M, B, 4s and 6s (which can be in any order).
Example: England Under-19s innings (47 overs maximum) R B M 4s 6s
- Batting details:
- Player lines
These are player name with initials, dismissal, score, (optional mins, balls, 4s, 6s, dots, 5s, strike rate).
Captain is indicated by *, wicket-keeper by + or # at the start of the line or immediately following the name (ie no space).
League professional is indicated by (Pro) at the start of the line or following the name.
Note that a catch is indicated by 'c' (not ct).
Catches/stumpings taken at the wicket by the non-designated wicket-keeper are indicated by (for example) c +Stewart
Catches taken by the designated wicket-keeper when not keeping wicket are shown by c -Stewart
Any unknown dismissal or part of a dismissal should be recorded as '?'
If a catch is known to be taken at the wicket but the wicket-keeper is not known then use c +?
If a catch is known not to be taken at the wicket but the wicket-keeper is not known (for example if the report says caught by Bloggs at first slip) then use c -Bloggs
Short names can be used for the fielder and bowler as long as they uniquely identify the player.
Substitute catchers should be named in parenteses if known, and fielder(s) involved in run outs likewise, with slashes separating more than one fielder involved in a run out.
The dismissal lines are free format (one space is the minimum between the different elements)
If a designated wicket-keeper bowls and takes a caught and bowled it must be entered as c -Bloggs b Bloggs
There must be as many B/M/4/6/0/5/SR items on each batting lines as there are items in the innnings header but they do not need to line up just be in the same sequence as the header. If not all of the elements are known for a particular player, then use '?' for the unknown item{s).
The elements given can be in any order and can be omitted if the details are not known for all players.
Dot balls can have a heading of either 0 or D.
Batting strike rate (SR) can be present but the figure is ignored as the upload will calculate the figure if appropriate and no check is made against a figure supplied.
Fives scored by a batsmen can be specified in the same way as fours and sixes - by use of a separate column. Remember though that if you add a column header then every batsman should have an entry for that column.
Examples
GS Chappell c Boycott b Snow 13
GS Chappell run out (Boycott/Snow) 13 13 ? 0 0
G.S.Chappell run out (G.Boycott/J.Snow) 13 13 ? 0 0
G.S.Chappell run out (sub [G.Boycott]) 13 13 ? 0 0
- Extras line
Line starts with 'Extras'
Breakdown, if present, can be in parentheses or not
The individual elements of extras can be omitted if the breakdown is unknown, but if they are known they need to be separated by commas, and noted as b, lb, w, nb, pen.
The number may appear either before or after the keyword, and it does not matter if there are no extras of a particular type whether or not they are recorded.
Examples:
b 2, lb 0, w 2
b2, w2
2b,w2
The line can be present or not if total extras is 0.
- Total line
Total line can include overs bowled but need not.
Wickets (or 'all out') can be included or not, but the number of batsman dismissed is compared with the number of FoWs, and the number stated here is ignored.
The innings will be recorded as all out if either the words 'all out' are used (to cater to cases where players retired or were absent) or the maximum number of wickets fell,
and will be recorded as innings ended if not all out and no indication of a declaration (which can be dec, decl, declared) appears here.
- Did not bat details:
Players who did not bat in the 1st innings must appear either in the batting list with the words 'did not bat' or must appear in a comma-separated list on a separate line starting "DNB: " that appears after the total line.
In general, did not bat details are not required for a team's second innings (but can be present).
However, the second inns DNBs are required for a team with a full substitute or replacement (unless the team list for the second inns is the same as the 11 who batted in the first innings)
- Team did not bat (or has not yet batted)
For a team that has not yet batted use:
Lancashire team:
A Player, B Player, C Player, ?
with enough ? to make the numbers up to the right number if players are unknown.
- Innings Forfeited
For a forfeited innings use:
Lancashire 1st innings (forfeited)
DNB: A Player, B Player, ...
- Fall of Wickets lines:
Start the line with 'FoW: ' or 'Fall of wickets: '
An entry must be supplied for every wicket with ? used for unknown runs.
If the batsman out at the fall of any wicket is known it is recorded in parentheses
The batting order position number for the batsman in that innings can be used instead of the name
If the over/ball at the FoW is known then this is added within the same parentheses - when both exist they are separated by comma with the name first.
Examples:
FoW: 1-21 (Smith), 2-30 (Jones, 12.2ov)
FoW: 1-21 (1), 2-30 (3, 12.2ov)
- Bowling analyses:
Must be headed by a line which says 'Bowling' followed by at least one of the analysis elements O M R W Wide NB 0 4 6 Econ SR (separated by any number of spaces or tabs).
There must be as many O/M/R/W/Wide/NB/0/4/6/Econ/SR items on each bowling line as there are items in the innnings header but they do not need to line up just be in the same sequence as the header. If not all of the elements are known for a particular player, then use '?' for the unknown item{s).
The elements given can be in any order and can be omitted if the details are not known for all players.
Wides and no-balls can also be given in brackets at the end of the bowling line in which case the relevant figure for the other bowlers will be assumed to be 0.
Dot balls can have a heading of either 0 or D.
Economy rate and bowling strike rate (SR) can be present but the figure is ignored as the upload will calculate the figure if appropriate and no check is made against a figure supplied.
Examples
Smith 12 5 25 3 0 1
Smith 12 5 25 3 (1nb)
Smith 12 5 25 3 (nb 1)
Jones 13.2 6 32 4 2 1
Jones 13.2 6 32 4 (2w, 1nb)
Jones 13.2 6 32 4 (nb 1, w 2)
Bowling O M R W NB Wd
Jones 13.2 6 32 4 1 2
- Player lines
Full substitutes and Replacement format:
Unused refers back to the ICC's short-lived experiment on allowing teams to make a substitution in the middle of a game.
Use the format which refers to a specific innings and number of overs only for a case when both the replacement and the player replaced were allowed to bat in that same innings. ? ov is valid if the overs at the time of that replacement are not known.
Examples are:
Teamname full substitutes: A Smith (J Bloggs), B Jones (C Robinson).
Teamname full substitute: VS Solanki (unused)
Teamname replacement: BJ Haddin (GD McGrath, England innings, 3 ov)
Australia replacement: SM Katich (GD McGrath, England innings, 0 ov, because they want a better batsman)
Derbyshire Second XI full substitutes: AKD Gray (LD Hughes, called up to first team on day 2), NGE Walker (PMR Havell, Derbyshire Second XI 2nd innings, 24 ov, called up for first team duty)
Where the player in parenthese in the one replaced.
Start any list of notes or milestones with 'Notes:' on a line on its own.
There are several different types of notes:
- Retired hurt:
there are two forms depending on whether a played returned or not (use ? for anything unknown).
The team's innings in parentheses is required unless unambiguous (for example, if the player only batted once).
retired hurt, retired ill or retired not out can be used.
Examples of the format:
J Smith (1) retired hurt at 25/3
J Bloggs (2) retired hurt on 3* from 26/4 to 65/5
- Powerplays:
Power play details should be lines of the following format:
Kenya powerplay 1: overs 1 to 10
Kenya powerplay 2 (chosen by the fielding side): overs 11 to 15
