Northumberland won this return match by 55 runs on the second day, after Cheshire had required in their second innings 175 runs to win in three and a half hours. The match between the two sides at Jesmond in June had been drawn, with Northumberland leading on first innings. For the winners, Norbury scored 71 and Richardson 50. In the Northumberland second innings Bell and Norbury put on 117 runs for the first wicket. For the losers, Brearley took 12 wickets in the match for 147 runs. Hunter's 40 was the highest score by a Cheshire batsman. In the Northumberland second innings, with the score at 35 without loss, Bell slipped when batting and strained himself. He carried on batting with a runner. A shower when the last wicket pair were batting in the Cheshire second innings seemed to threaten the Northumberland victory, but it only stopped play for ten minutes.
[Missing: Extras breakdown; in Northumberland first innings boundaries in Richardson's 50, in Northumberland second innings boundaries in Norbury's 71, precise time completed.]
